A day with VIKI – 24 hours in 4 minutes [VIDEO]

The idea of a connected home has been around for many years, in the way of controlling the home from your mobile phone, tablet and, more recently, with the help of a virtual assistant. Nowadays, there are countless solutions that allow you to turn on the lights, turn the TV on or off, set the room temperature. But can they be called “smart”, as long as the action is initiated from the phone, tablet, voice or pre-programmed by a technician who hard-codes the actions of the “smart” house?

We dare to say, after many discussions with users of smart homes and specialists, during the event IMWorld 2018, that only the VIKI system behaves like a true virtual butler, who knows your habits and preferences.

VIKI has that added artificial intelligence needed for any connected home solution, so that, once installed, it will turn your home into a truly intelligent one. VIKI means more than just connecting devices to a common database, implementing algorithms to learn user preferences, managing to become a partner. Specifically, VIKI intelligence will learn by itself to control the lights, the temperature, the windows blinds, the multimedia equipment in the house, analyzing the current context and acting on the patterns identified in the previous experience.

VIKI is no longer just an idea, it is a reality, implemented in homes as real as possible. We spent a day with VIKI in an apartment in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and we observed it “at work”. Within a few weeks after installation, VIKI learned the preferences of the owner of the house. VIKI turns on the radio with the favorite news program in “Good Morning” mode, it raises the blinds, brews the coffee and turns on the right lights, in the right rooms.
When the owner leaves the house, VIKI locks the door, turns off the lights and continues to “work” during the users’ absence: it waters the plants, it lowers the blinds if the sun is too strong, it watches that everything is in order and it sends alerts on the user’s mobile phone if the sensors detect smoke (fire alert), gas or water (flood alert), if a door or window has been opened (break-in alert).

For each scenario, VIKI knows how to act: it permanently learns when the user is at home and performs pre-programmed actions when the user is away or is resting. When the user returns home, the temperature is just right, and the lights turn on when needed. In the evening, it’s VIKI, again, that creates the proper conditions for relaxation and rest.
We invite you to watch the video to understand why VIKI is special and unique in the field of home automation systems.

Is your house ready for the holiday?

viki buton alarma

The smart home is based on three main concepts: comfort, safety and economy. When we prepare for a longer vacation, we will concentrate more on safety.

Some people take precautions, as to leave an interior light on and stop mail delivery so that thieves do not suspect that the house is empty. In addition to offline tricks for a “busy” home, once you leave a smart home then IoT devices (smart lights, internet-connected security cameras, blinds and smart thermostats) along with VIKI can help you manage your home remotely and even simulate the fact that someone is in the house.

The benefits and challenges of a green wall in a smart home

viki perete verde

While working at our projects of implementing smart homes, we have sometimes encountered challenges related to the maintenance of some green walls, and today we come up with some practical and useful information so that your smart green wall can be programmed, managed and maintained as efficiently as possible.
From the lush gardens on the roofs and the green urban initiatives, the appetite for the metropolitan nature is obviously increasing. Based on the fact that most people in the urban area spend more than 20 hours a day indoors, there is a need to improve the air in these spaces through the “living wall” solution, a successful combination of design and functionality.

A perfect solution to harmonize nature with urban space, the green wall contributes to improving air quality, absorbs carbon dioxide, dust and releases oxygen.
A living interior associated with a smart solution will give vitality and a pleasant look to the interior of the house. Usually, a green wall is equipped with a water tank with filter and, in dark places, it can be equipped with lamps that support photosynthesis of plants in the absence of natural light. The well-made arrangements are transformed into works of art, into vivid paintings with different shades of green or even colored.

It is ideal to choose plants that do not require much sunlight; there are some plants recommended for plant walls, because they are easy to maintain and are not demanding, including: Epipremnum, Aglaonema, Aeschynanthus radicans, Anthurium, Stephanotis floribunda, Feriga Nephrolepis exaltata, Scindapsus, Croton, Cordyline, Dracaena sp. or Spathiphyllum.

Beyond the special appearance that a green wall gives to the space in which it is installed, the technical challenges that appear in the automation of its maintenance are directly proportional to the “fine-living” benefits that it brings.
Commonly and as standard in the field, for irrigation are used programmable sockets, used for watering the plants at predetermined time intervals (days and hours of the week).

Finer elements in managing the irrigation of the plants are the irrigation controllers, that also have a rain and humidity sensor. These systems allow the irrigation to stop when the soil is humid enough, and in the case of the outdoor gardens, the system will stop the irrigation when it has rained recently. But what do you do when you have a party in the garden and you don’t want the night irrigation program to ruin your party?

Then comes a smart irrigation system, connected to the VIKI home automation software. Using consumer-controlled timing and timing equipment (for example: Qubino Flush 1D Relay or FIBARO Relay Switch), it is possible to start / stop / inhibit the irrigation of plants depending on how the home and its inhabitants work, without reprogramming the system.

In our latest automation project, we experiment with our own automation solution for the green wall, because the timing of the watering and sequencing the irrigation sessions are essential, considering the over 220 plants that are connected by a system of water tanks and channels.
If too much water is used, the plants at the bottom “drown”. If too little water is put on, the upper ones suffer from “thirst”. During the tests, there were several programs and watering times, starting with 1-2 minutes / day, then every 2 days, finally a watering program was chosen: 20-30 seconds, one day, then a pause for two days. And the fine tuning process is underway.
We conclude from this experience that the ability of the hardware to be programmed and reprogrammed as easily as possible to meet the user-set requirements is essential for the entire irrigation automation process.
The smart green wall takes the advantages of green spaces, brings freshness and transforms urban environments where vegetation has not been a strong point.
VIKI can be your little gardener, so once properly programmed, it will take care of your plants.
By integrating a smart system that deals with the monitoring and maintenance of the green space, you make sure that the plants will have a longer life and these living pictures will give you the spectacle of growing and blooming under your eyes.

Did you forget a window open? VIKI takes care of the house on any weather

viki alerta meteo

The rainy and cool season is here, the season with capricious and often surprising weather – as we have seen in recent days. We no longer sleep with the windows open at night, but in the morning we have to open the windows, let the fresh autumn air enter the house. It’s just that in the morning we are too hurried and sometimes inattentive, forgetting to leave the house in order, so that when we return we have the comfort and peace that we have been waiting for all day.

VIKI helps us, again. The scenario is well known to everyone: in a hurry, we leave the windows open in the morning, forgetting to check the weather forecast. A few minutes of rain is enough, if it is torrential and the wind is still blowing, on the way back we may find a small flood or at least wet objects around the window.

You can now control the smart home VIKI with your voice

viki si alexa

VIKI and Alexa became closer friends this summer. The last time we told you about the “relationship” between the artificial intelligence VIKI and the Amazon Echo Dot (code name: Alexa) was in May, when compatibility tests were in progress.

Since then, the VIKI team has been able to integrate more and more voice commands into the application, commands that VIKI is currently able to execute promptly: setting a room temperature, displaying the weather forecast, opening the door, turning on / off the TV, playing / stopping the music player and more.

Thus, now we can talk directly to our virtual “butler”, and soon we will not need (too much) phone / tablet anymore, it will be enough to use our voice in order to control the intelligent house VIKI.

The proof can be seen in the latest video shot by the VIKI team during the tests.
